Regula’s Volunteer Story — Switzerland

Regula's Volunteer Story

“Before I came to Canada, I hoped to learn something about a different culture, learn to speak fluent English, meet different people, have an experience in social work and finally, to have a great time. Everything happened but much better than expected.

Regula's Volunteer Story

I volunteered at a Youth Shelter and I was mostly involved in just spending some time in conversations and discussions. In the morning, I was part of the breakfast club, which allowed the youth to talk and discuss their plans for the day. On Friday night, we always had “Gym and Pizza” night. We played volleyball, floor hockey or dodge ball.

I also helped with younger children at a local school doing different activities like crafts, painting, reading and playing games. I assisted when we went to the library and in group activities in the morning circle. It was often a challenge to deal with conflicts and problems between the kids but I was surprised how fast the children accepted and trusted me.”

Aya's Volunteer Story — Japan

I came to Canada to learn about childcare and volunteered for 4 weeks.  I spent time in a daycare and also helped with the after school program.  We played games, made crafts and played sports outside.  When we did crafts, the leader gave me material so I could learn how to make the craft too!  It was very fun!  I asked a lot of questions and learned so much from the staff!  They were always willing to answer all my questions!

I really appreciate how everyone helped me!  I had a wonderful experience and will always remember this time.  Now I have the confidence to become a teacher!
